Chronic disease management

According to the Center of Disease Control, chronic diseases cause 7 out of 10 deaths each year and are responsible for 86 percent of America’s health care costs. Some examples of common chronic disease include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Obesity
  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Arthritis
  • Dementia
  • Seizure Disorders

As of 2012, about half of all American adults had at least one chronic health problem. About one in four adults had two or more chronic diseases. Unfortunately, these conditions can cause long-term complications, including kidney failure, disability, limb amputation, etc. At Lighthouse Family Health, we can often help prevent some of these diseases altogether and/or make certain that you are getting the best care possible for your chronic condition(s).

Causes of Chronic Disease

So, what causes chronic diseases in the first place? Unfortunately, one of the main causes is simply our on genetics. However, there are many modifiable risk factors behind chronic disease. At Lighthouse Family House, we take a very thorough, detailed, health history from each patient and will help create an individualized plan to help mitigate all of the modifiable risk factors a person may be facing.

It can be a challenge to know exactly what constitutes a healthy diet, or what exercise plan is right for you. We can help by discuss foods you should eat, as well as foods you should avoid. We can also recommend exercise regimes that are right for your needs and abilities. We can even help you to quit unhealthy habits that can provoke disease, like smoking and heavy drinking.

For those that currently have chronic disease, don’t settle for subpar care where you’re made to feel like a number. You deserve high-quality, compassionate, care. And for those that think you may be experiencing chronic disease, or are concerned about prevention, please don’t hesitate or ignore the signs/symptoms! If you currently have or think you may be suffering from chronic disease, schedule an appointment today.
